To guarantee the quality and safety of our infrastructure, the organizations within the infrastructure sector use standards. Standards describe the rules and guidelines for the design and management of the infrastructure. But these standards often do not take climate change into account, which means that the infrastructure may not be well prepared for the future. How can parties from the infrastructure sector take climate change into account, and what climate information do they need for this? That is what we are investigating in this project.

Eva Boon weet alles over dit project

What does the project look like?

The project started in the fall of 2019. We held interviews with various parties from the infrastructure sector and organized workshops. We have thus mapped out what information the parties need and we have identified opportunities for adjusting the standards. Based on the identified needs and opportunities, we will derive relevant indicators in 2020 from data from the climate data portal of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). These indicators will become available in an infrastructure information system. The parties from the infrastructure sector test the system, after which we improve the system together with them. This information system is intended to help the parties in the infrastructure sector to adapt their standards to climate change.

What is C3S?

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) is one of the six themes for information services of the Copernicus Earth Observation Programme. The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) carries out this information service on behalf of the European Union.

What is our role?

CAS inventories the information needs and tests the developed information system for two types of infrastructure: rail infrastructure and urban infrastructure. For the rail infrastructure, the rail organizations ProRail (NL) and Network Rail (UK) are involved as possible users of the information system. For urban infrastructure, that is the municipality of Amersfoort.
