Around the world, water managers are noticing the effects of climate change. Floods, drought and a lack of clean water are increasing worldwide. As a result, the demand for water management knowledge and expertise is also increasing.

The Blue Deal is an international programme of 17 long-term partnerships in 15 countries, including Mozambique. With the Blue Deal, we are developing a climate vulnerability map for the Mozambican water authority ARA-Norte’s catchment area. Mozambican water managers can use the information to determine which problems are urgent and where there are opportunities for climate adaptation.

Sophie van der Horst weet alles over dit project

How do we proceed?

To create the climate vulnerability map for ARA-Norte’s catchment area, we will first collect existing data and use local knowledge that we will pick up during workshops. At a workshop in November 2023 on climate risks in the area, we will use a draft version of the map. We will then evaluate this with local stakeholders. Based on the feedback we get during the evaluation, we will make a final map after the workshop.

How can water managers use the climate vulnerability map?

Mozambican water managers can use the climate vulnerabilities map as a visual support tool during risk dialogues. The outcomes of those dialogues can then be developed by the ARA-Norte water board into a climate adaptation plan, for instance. It is also possible to use the climate vulnerability map to prioritise challenges for fundraising. Furthermore, the data collected for the map could also be used to develop a regional climate impact atlas for local policymakers.
