In order to support Curaçao to prepare for the consequences of climate change, we have developed the climate impact atlas for Curaçao together with the Curaçao Climate Change Platform (CCCP): klimakorsou.com. KlimaKòrsou was commissioned by the International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Areas (IPDC). The atlas is available in Papiamentu, English and Dutch and can be used by anyone concerned with climate change in Curaçao.

Curaçao faces challenges due to climate change. Coastal flooding, pluvial flooding and increasing heat threaten the future of the island. KlimaKòrsou provides insight into the different hazards and impacts. For example, which places are vulnerable to flooding? And in which places will it get very hot? You can find information about that on KlimaKòrsou. With this atlas, we want to contribute to a sustainable knowledge infrastructure.

Timo Kelder knows everything about this project

Why KlimaKòrsou?

KlimaKòrsou gathers important information about the effects of climate change on Curaçao. A lot is already being done on Curaçao to limit these consequences, but little data was available. KlimaKòrsou therefore brings all knowledge together in one central location. KlimaKòrsou helps governments, residents and communities better understand the consequences of climate change in their own region so they can better prepare for it.

What can KlimaKòrsou be used for?

KlimaKòrsou is the Climate Impact Atlas of Curaçao. It shows the effects of climate change for the island, now and in the future. You will find maps, map explanations, a mind map about the impacts, statistics and stories.

  • Maps: In the viewer, you can use different maps to see how climate change can affect an area. You can view this for flooding and heat. The basic maps provide information on soil, vegetation, geology, mangrove and river beds, among other things.
  • Map explanations: The map explanations provide background information to key maps from the viewer. The map explanations cover various topics, such as “Future coastlines,” “Land surface temperature,” “Coral reef health,” and “River discharges”.
  • Mind map climate impacts: The mind map gives an overview of the effects of climate change on Curaçao, based on the 2024 report Climate Effects on Curaçao.
  • Statistics: The statistics give insight into the consequences of climate change for different themes. They are based on a report with the results of a workshop for the Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA). We conducted this workshop with EcoVision N.V. in the fall of 2022.
  • Stories: The stories by Curaçao writer Tyson Hill let you experience the main climate consequences and see possible solutions. They tie in with Curaçao’s culture and bring the topic closer to the islanders’ experiences. We specially designed the visualizations accompanying the stories to present the information in an accessible and appealing way.

Who contributed to KlimaKòrsou?

Data from the atlas came from the Meteorological Department Curaçao (MDC), Uitvoeringsorganisatie Openbare Werken (UOOW), Carmabi, Dutch Caribbean Biodiversity Database (DCBD), and Wageningen University & Research (WUR). The NAAM, EcoVision NV and the reasearch programme NWO-Eilande(rs)n aan het Roer have assisted with a stakeholder workshop. The working group on awareness within the Curaçao Climate Change Platform (CCCP) used the knowledge gathered to create lively stories. KlimaKòrsou was developed with the CCCP and funded by the International Panel on Deltas, Coastal Areas and Islands (IPDC).

What else is happening in the project?

In the near future, different stakeholders, such as governments and communities, will use the tool to develop plans and measures. We will remain involved to ensure that the information remains up-to-date, for example by adding new data. The CCCP is organizing sessions to promote further collaboration and impact of the tool.
