Farmers in Ghana are greatly affected by climate change. A climate atlas for Ghana can support these farmers to make smart choices about crop types and harvest time, for instance. This can ultimately ensure higher and more consistent yields. We are therefore developing a climate atlas for Ghana, based on the atlas we made for Kenya. Once we have completed the atlas, we will train officials, extension workers and students at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Ghana to use and manage this atlas. They can then help smallholder farms in Ghana to adapt their operations to climate change. This project is part of Nuffic’s Orange Knowledge Program.

Sophie van der Horst weet alles over dit project

What does the training involve?

The training consists of two online sessions and a four-day live training in January. With the training, university employees and students learn to use and manage the climate atlas themselves. They learn more about climate change and do joint case studies on a crop of their choice. We keep the training low-key by using freely accessible data from online databases.

What is the purpose of the training?

The training aims for climate, agriculture, hydrology and ICT professionals in Ghana to have a better understanding of climate change in their region. This will enable them to help smallholder farmers make choices to adapt their operations to climate change. To achieve this goal, the training has two focal points:

  • The training should enable UDS employees and students to use and manage the atlas themselves. In the process, they will also learn to choose indicators that best suit the local situation and to find data online themselves. To do so, they are taught about climate change, climate models and data sources.
  • The training helps UDS employees and students collaborate with different disciplines. In the training, participants form multidisciplinary groups of climate scientists, hydrologists, agricultural experts and ICTs. In this way, they learn to devise innovative solutions to complex issues.

What is our role in the project?

We are developing the climate atlas for Ghana ourselves. For this, we use as a basis the climate atlas that we made for Kenya. To provide and develop the training courses, we cooperate with Wageningen University and Research.

What is the Orange Knowledge Programme?

The Orange Knowledge Programme is a Dutch global development programme, available in 30 developing countries and managed by Nuffic, a Dutch non-profit organisation for internationalisation in education. Launched mid-2017, it aims to have provided tens of thousands with the possibility to change their future through education and training by the end of 2024 The programme is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
