With the training course ‘How to MOOC?’, we taught employees at BUET University of Technology in Bangladesh to create their own MOOCs on adaptive delta management. ‘MOOC’ stands for Massive Online Open Course. A ‘MOOC’ is a free online course that anyone can join. The course helps employees of the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) at BUET University in Bangladesh to create their own MOOCs on adaptive delta management. With those MOOCs, they can contribute to the implementation of the Bangladesh Delta Plan (BDP2100) that the Bengal government uses to prepare for the effects of climate change. This project is funded by Nuffic from the Orange Knowledge Programme.

Why the choice of MOOCs?

Because a large part of Bangladesh is located in a delta, the country is very vulnerable to flooding. With adaptive delta management, Bangladesh protects itself in a sustainable way against rising sea levels. IWFM therefore wants to teach as many people as possible the key insights of adaptive delta management. MOOCs are ideal for this: they are online and free.

What is the Orange Knowledge Programme?

The Orange Knowledge Programme is a Dutch global development programme, available in 30 developing countries and managed by Nuffic, a Dutch non-profit organisation for internationalisation in education. Launched mid-2017, it aims to have provided tens of thousands with the possibility to change their future through education and training by the end of 2024 The programme is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
