Africa is\u00a0<\/span>highly<\/span>\u00a0vulnerable<\/span>\u00a0to the impacts of climate change. As climate impacts grow, they put pressure on food systems and\u00a0<\/span>cause more people to m<\/span>igrate<\/span>\u00a0to the cities<\/span>. Climate services can help people\u00a0<\/span>deal with\u00a0<\/span>these impacts\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>prepare for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>However, these services are still limited. They are often\u00a0<\/span>organised<\/span>\u00a0in a top-down way and mainly focus on the national level.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n

What is the project about?<\/h3>\n

SAFE4ALL Africa<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0European-African\u00a0research and innovation project\u00a0that\u00a0aims to strengthen\u00a0climate resilience and food security in Kenya,\u00a0Ghana\u00a0and Zimbabwe.\u00a0Together with seventeen partners,\u00a0we develop climate services that meet the needs of users in these countries. These services help people make better decisions in a\u00a0changing climate. For example, a farmer can decide when to sow crops next week, while a city can plan for the climate conditions expected in 2050.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is our role?<\/h3>\n

W<\/span>ithin\u00a0<\/span>SAFE4ALL, we focus on local embedding and learning. Our\u00a0<\/span>goal<\/span>\u00a0is to make sure that SAFE4ALL\u2019s products and tools become part of the daily work of end-users and fit within\u00a0<\/span>existing\u00a0<\/span>organisational<\/span>\u00a0structures<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Also<\/span>, we co-create the Climate Impact Atlases for Kenya, Ghana, and Zimbabwe. These atlases will be the first public one-stop shops for long-term climate impact information in these countries.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Local embedding and learning<\/h3>\n

For the tools to make a difference,\u00a0people need to use them in their daily work.\u00a0That is why\u00a0we work closely with the intended end-users of the SAFE4ALL tools. Farmers, extension\u00a0officers\u00a0and local governments are all part of the\u00a0development\u00a0process. We exchange knowledge, create suitable materials, and\u00a0co-design\u00a0the tools.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An important part of this work is the SAFE4ALL Learning Program.\u00a0In 2025, more than 900 people joined our online sessions.\u00a0Alongside this\u00a0program, we are building an in-person community.\u00a0Members of this community help develop the tools and\u00a0get together for more in-depth training. During these sessions, they\u00a0map\u00a0local climate impacts,\u00a0define\u00a0what resilience means in their own situation, and create climate stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three Climate Impact Atlases<\/h3>\n

Kenya,\u00a0Ghana\u00a0and Zimbabwe will all feel\u00a0major\u00a0impacts of climate change.\u00a0Governments and\u00a0organisations\u00a0are already developing policies and\u00a0taking action. However, there is still no public one-stop shop that brings together all climate impact information.\u00a0As a result, decision-makers often lack the data they need.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To address this gap, we are co-developing a Climate Impact Atlas for each of the three countries. We build on our experience in other countries while adapting the atlases to local needs and conditions. We develop them together with national meteorological services, universities, and farmers\u2019 unions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The atlases show how rainfall, drought, heat, and flooding may change by 2050 and 2100. They combine maps with\u00a0custom-made\u00a0tools, such as the Critical Threshold Explorer. In addition to data, the atlases include climate stories, adaptation options, and learning materials. All atlases are built with open-source\u00a0software\u00a0and our goal is to transfer them to a national partner before the project ends.<\/span><\/p>\n
