A lot of cultural heritage can be found throughout the Netherlands. Think, for example, of built monuments, UNESCO World Heritage Sites or archaeological sites. Much of this cultural heritage is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. That is why the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) asked us to develop a map that provides a first national picture of the risks of climate change for heritage.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n

What did the project entail?<\/h3>\n

In this project, we developed a base map that shows the risks of climate change for cultural heritage throughout the Netherlands. To do so, we first performed a climate risk scan. This scan shows how vulnerable cultural heritage in the Netherlands is to increasing drought, heat, pluvial and fluvial flood risks. We incorporated the results of the climate risk scan in several map layers and a map narrative. The map narrative explains what the map layers show, how to use them and the methods used to develop the map.<\/p>\n

Provinces can use this base map as a starting point to investigate how vulnerable cultural heritage within their own province is to climate change. They can further deepen that research with more specific information on issues within the province alone.<\/p>\n
