The Climate Adaptation Knowledge Portal<\/a> is the primary platform for climate adaptation in the Netherlands. The portal provides a central information facility for governments, market players, educational institutions and residents to make the Netherlands climate-proof. CAS developed the portal in 2014 from the research programme Kennis voor Klimaat and the Delta Programme Nieuwbouw en Herstructurering. Since its launch, we have been managing this knowledge portal on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Attention to climate adaptation has increased enormously in recent years and this is reflected in the activities on the website: the number of visitors and also the number of downloads continues to rise sharply. You can do so via the knowledge dossiers. Since 2024, the portal also includes information about the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Furthermore, you will find everything about climate adaptation policy: from the Delta Plan on Spatial Adaptation (DPRA) and the National Climate Adaptation Strategy (NAS) to financial schemes, partnerships and knowledge programmes.<\/p>\n

What are the consequences of climate change there, and how can these islands adapt to them? Climate change has a major impact on the Caribbean islands. Furthermore, the consequences of climate change differ from those faced by the European Netherlands. Therefore, it is important for these islands to have a dedicated central location where they can find climate information.<\/p>\n

There are also many other topics in which climate adaptation plays a role, such as urban water quality, subsidence, green in the city, water and soil as guiding principles, and stimulating residents. Some of the knowledge dossiers stem from studies we have conducted together with other parties. We then present the results from these studies as clearly and conveniently as possible in a knowledge dossier. Below, we highlight a few of these knowledge dossiers.<\/p>\n

From 2021 to 2023, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), together with other knowledge institutes, investigated what effects climate change may have on the quality of urban surface water. We contributed to the project by processing the results of the study into an online knowledge dossier on the Climate Adaptation Knowledge Portal. In it, we describe in plain language and in a convenient way what effects climate change can have on water quality. We have also worked with the knowledge institutions to create a number of interactive tools. With the interactive knowledge document you can see how climate change and adaptation measures can affect water quality. And with the tool Limits Urban Water Quality, Climate and Adaptation (SWKA) you can visualize for a specific water system how vulnerable it is to climate change and why.<\/p>\n

Suppose electricity grid fails due to extreme weather, or no more water comes out of the tap, then we have a big problem. Important functions like these can be vulnerable to flooding, waterlogging, drought and heat. That is why they are called vital and vulnerable functions. Together with Deltares, Arcadis, Royal HaskoningDHV and the University of Twente, we explored how to assess the extent to which vital and vulnerable functions are well protected and what is needed to protect them better. We have incorporated the results in a knowledge dossier on the Climate Adaptation Knowledge Portal.<\/p>\n

LIFE-IP Climate adaptation<\/h3>\n

An impressive programme of which all knowledge can be found on the Knowledge Portal is LIFE-IP Climate Adaptation<\/a>. This programme runs from 2022 to 2027 and aims to accelerate climate adaptation through better cooperation and organisation. LIFE-IP is a Dutch programme co-financed by the European Union. The EU contribution is almost \u20ac10 million. The programme is coordinated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), and implemented by a consortium of 22 governments and organisations. It is unique that the knowledge from such a large project is shared through the knowledge portal and not through a separate website. The beauty of this is that the knowledge is immediately embedded in the existing climate adaptation knowledge infrastructure. From CAS, we make sure that all information about the project is given a logical place on the portal.<\/p>\n

How do we ensure that the portal works well?<\/h3>\n

We ensure that the portal’s structure matches both the available knowledge and information and the users’ wishes. A user group meets annually to discuss possible improvements to the portal. Based on the points of improvement collected, two major updates have now been implemented. Besides managing and maintaining the portal, we also perform the helpdesk function. Visitors to the website can use a form to easily ask questions about the information on the portal and more general questions about climate adaptation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
