The Indus basin in Pakistan and India is a global climate change hotspot: it is an area where large numbers of vulnerable and poor people and communities are subjected to strong physical and ecological effects of climate change. They depend on water flowing through the Indus River for their livelihood. But due to climate change and socio-economic developments, there is a threat of water shortage in this area. The SustaIndus project is looking for ways to ensure that people in this area have enough food, water and energy in the future.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n

What is SustaIndus?<\/h3>\n

SustaIndus<\/a> is a research program of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).<\/span> It aims to support the population in the Indus basin by developing sustainable pathways towards science based and climate smart solutions. The arid plains of the Indus river depend strongly on the high-mountain \u201cwater towers\u201d of snow and ice. The Indus water tower, with 235 million people, is <\/span>the most relied upon glacier-based water system in the world<\/span><\/a>. But rapid socio-economic developments and geopolitical tensions over water rights make future water availability a tough challenge. The <\/span>SustaIndus Story Map<\/span><\/a> gives a concise introduction to the project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How is CAS involved?<\/h3>\n

The role of CAS in the project is to translate research findings into accessible information, facilitating co-creation between the consortium partners and key stakeholders and developing tangible knowledge products.<\/span> In addition to the SustaIndus Story Map, we have created three other Story Maps:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Enough water and food<\/a> is about possible routes to achieve enough water and food in the Indus Valley.<\/li>\n
  2. Hydropower development in the Upper Indus Basin<\/a> is about the possibilities of securing energy based on hydropower plants.<\/li>\n
  3. Hydropower potential in the Upper Indus<\/a>.
